국립고궁박물관 소장품 활용한 가로경관등 점등식 / 12.12. 경복궁 신무문 앞

문화재청 국립고궁박물관(관장 김인규)은 종로구청(구청장 정문헌)과 협력하여 조선왕실 밤잔치용 사각유리등을 활용한 가로경관등을 개발해 종로구 일대에 350개를 설치하고, 이를 기념하기 위해 12월 12일 오후 6시 경복궁 신무문 앞에서 점등 행사를 개최한다.

<사각유리등>은 국립고궁박물관 소장유물로, 옷칠을 한 나무로 틀을 짠 뒤 꽃 그림으로 장식한 유리를 사방에 두른 등이다. 바닥 틀 가운데에는 받침을 두어 등잔이나 초를 꽂았고, 유리등에는 고리를 달아 궁궐 지붕 처마에 걸어서 사용했다. 조선왕실에서는 본래 잔치 당일 이른 아침에 행사를 치뤘는데, 19세기 순조(純祖)의 왕세자였던 효명세자(1809~1830)에 의해 처음으로 밤잔치가 시작되었고 사각유리등은 1829년 왕실 밤잔치 때부터 사용되었다.

국립고궁박물관은 <사각유리등>을 활용해 2020년 가정에서 직접 조립하는 DIY 문화상품을 개발․판매해, 10여 차례 이상 완판될 정도로 많은 사랑을 받았으며, 또한 야외조명등으로도 개발해 박물관 정문과 인근에 시범 설치하기도 했다. 이러한 성과를 바탕으로 경복궁, 창덕궁과 종묘 등 왕실 관련 유산이 많은 종로구청과 힘을 합쳐 사각유리등 경관가로등 설치에 이르렀다.

<사각유리등> 가로경관등은 ▲ 경복궁을 둘러싸고 있는 효자로, 청와대로, 삼청로에 총 271개, ▲ 창의문로 40개, ▲ 창경궁로 19개, ▲ 북인사마당 9개, ▲ 창덕궁 돈화문로(율곡로)에 11개 등 종로구에 총 350개가 설치되었다. 12월 12일 오후 6시 점등행사를 통해 왕실문화유산을 상징하는 가로경관등이 종로의 밤을 밝히게 될 것이다.
가로경관등을 설치한 곳은 모두 국내․외 관광객이 많이 찾는 곳으로, 방문객에게 새로운 볼거리를 제공하며 자연스럽게 조선왕실문화유산을 알리는 계기가 될 것으로 기대한다.

문화재청 국립고궁박물관은 앞으로도 지역사회 발전에 기여하는 역할을 수행할 것이며, 왕실문화유산의 적극적 활용으로 그 아름다움과 의미를 알리는데 더욱 노력할 것이다.

The National Palace Museum of Korea (Director Kim In-kyu) under the Cultural Heritage Administrationhas installed 350 street lights developed by applying the lanterns used for night parties for the Joseon royal family in the Jongno-gu area of downtown Seoul in cooperation with Jongno-gu Office (Mayor Chung Moon-heon), and Yonhap News Agency (CEO Seong Ghi-hong), the nation's key newswire. To mark this, a lighting event will be held in front of Sinmumun Gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace at 6 p.m., on December 12.

'Square glass lantern' is a collection of the Palace Museum which is framed with lacquered wood, and covered with glass decorated with flower paintings. A lamp or a candle was put in the middle of the floor of the lamp, a hook was attached and it was hung on the roof eaves. Festivals were originally held in the early morning by the Joseon royal family, but night festivals were initiated by 19th century's King Sunjo's Crown Prince Hyomyeong (1809 ~1830). The square glass lanterns were used since the royal night festival in 1829.

The National Palace Museum produced a DIY cultural merchandise using the 'square lantern' in 2020 and it sold out more than ten times. The Square Lantern was also developed as an outdoor lamp and it was installed for demonstration in the main entrance of the museum and the surroundings. Based on these achievements, the museum collaborated with Jongno-gu, which has a lot of inheritance related to royal families such as Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, Jongmyo Shrine and more, and has installed square glass lantern specially designed as street lights.

350 square glass lanterns specially designed as street lights are currently installed in Jongno-gu in total. 271 in Hyoja-ro, surrounding Gyeongbokgung Palace, Cheongwadae-ro, and Samcheong-ro, 40 in Changuimun-ro, 19 in Changgyeonggung-ro, 9 in Bukinsamadang and 11 in Changdeokgung Palace Donhawmun (Yulgok-ro), in each spots. The spots are where Koreans and tourists visit a lot, and it is expected to provide new sights, and naturally let people know the cultural heritage of the Joseon Royal Family. The street lights symbolizing the royal cultural heritage will light up Jongno's night as it will be lit for the first time in this evening (6 p.m.) at the lighting event.

Not only the installation of the street lights, but the National Palace Museum of Korea will continue its responsibility to develop the community and to let people know about the beauty and the significance of the royal cultural heritages by actively utilizing it.
