  문화재청 국립고궁박물관(관장 김동영)은 정조의 활을 쏜 내역과 하사품을 수록한 문서인『오의상 고풍』을 5월의 ’큐레이터 추천 왕실 유물‘로 정해 국립고궁박물관 상설전시장에서 소개하고, 3일부터 온라인(유튜브)으로도 공개한다.

  고풍(古風)은 임금이 활을 쏘아 적중하면 임금 곁의 신하가 축하의 의미로 상을 청하는 풍습 또는 임금이 활을 쏜 내역과 하사품을 수록한 문서를 일컫는다. 고풍 문서에는 문서명, 상을 받는 사람, 임금이 활을 쏘아 득점한 내역, 활을 쏜 날짜, 선물 내용과 임금의 수결이 수록되어 있다.

  <오의상 고풍>은 1796년 2월 5일 정조가 활을 쏘아 15발 중 9발을 적중시키자 이를 축하한 무신인 오의상(吳毅常, ?~1820)에게 보약인 ‘보중익기탕(補中益氣湯)’ 5첩(貼)을 선물로 준 내용을 수록한 고풍 문서다. <오의상 고풍>은 비록 간략한 내용만 수록되어 있으나 임금의 활쏘기 문화를 생생하게 확인할 수 있는 유물이다.

  한편, 임금의 활쏘기 기록은 현판 또는 비석으로 제작하여 길이 남기도 한다. 국립고궁박물관 소장품 중 1842년 7월 15일 조선 헌종이 춘당대(春塘臺) 옆 단풍정(丹楓亭)에서 활을 쏜 사실을 기록한 현판이 대표적이다. <오의상 고풍>과 활쏘기 기록 현판은 모두 국립고궁박물관 ‘왕실의례실’에서 실물로 볼 수 있다.

  박물관 입장은 코로나19 확산 방지를 위한 방역수칙을 준수한 가운데 진행하며, 국립고궁박물관은 직접 방문하지 않아도 국민 누구나 볼 수 있도록 박물관 누리집(gogung.go.kr)과 문화재청·국립고궁박물관 유튜브에서 국영문 자막과 함께 해설영상도 공개한다.

​The National Palace Museum of Korea (Director: Kim Dong-Young), an affiliate of the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea, has selected Document Bestowed by the King to His Subject for Practicing Archery Together as the “Curator’s Choice from the Royal Treasures” for the month of May. In addition to being displayed in the gallery, the document will be presented in a video broadcast via the internet (on YouTube) starting May 3.

Gopung refers to a custom in which subjects attending the king request a gift as a gesture of congratulations after the king scored a bullseye in archery. It can also refer to a document containing the details of the king’s round and the gifts he bestowed. A gopung records the title of the document, name of the recipient, score earned by the king, date of the archery round, goods bestowed, and the king’s signature.

TheDocument Bestowed by the King to His Subject for Practicing Archery Together contains a record of a gift of five packs of herbal medicine bestowed by King Jeonjo (r. 1724–1776) on a military official named O Ui-sang, who congratulated the king for scoring nine bullseyes on the fifteen shots he made. Although simply a concise note, the document offers insight into the royal passion for archery during the Joseon Dynasty.

Royal archery records were also inscribed on hanging signboards and steles. A notable example housed in the National Palace Museum of Korea is a signboard recording the archery session held by King Heonjong (r. 1834–1849) at Danpungjeong Pavilion next to Chundangdae Pavilion on the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month in 1842. TheDocument Bestowed by the King to His Subject for Practicing Archery Together and other documents and hanging signboards illustrating royal archery rounds are on display in the gallery of Royal Rituals of the Joseon Dynasty. Those who are unable to visit the gallery can still enjoy this month’s Curator’s Choice virtually through a video with Korean and English subtitles available on the museum’s website (gogung.go.kr) and on the YouTube channels of the museum and the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea.
