무료 셔틀버스, 탐방 프로그램 운영으로 미국 한인 동포사회 내 ‘K-공유유산’ 가치 확산

  문화재청(청장 최응천)은 국외소재문화재재단(이사장 김정희)과 주미대한제국공사관(미국 워싱턴 D.C. 로건서클 소재, 이하 ‘공사관’)의 관람 편의와 활용도 증진을 위해 미국 워싱턴 D.C. 인근에 거주하는 재외동포를 대상으로 <찾아가는 주미대한제국공사관> 순환 버스(셔틀버스)(2월~11월)와 <미국 속 한국을 만나다> 탐방 프로그램(5월, 10월)을 운영한다.

공사관은 조선말, 대한제국 시기 주미 공사관으로 사용된 건물로서, 1891년 매입된 이후 1910년 일본에 의해 강제로 팔리기까지 약 20년간의 우리 역사를 담고 있다. 이후 공사관은 미국의 개인 소유가 되었다가, 지난 2012년 10월 문화재청이 매입하였다. 5년간 자료 수집과 복원 및 새 단장(리모델링) 공사를 거쳐, 2018년 5월 역사 전시관으로 새롭게 문을 열었고, 지금까지도 대표적인 ‘K-공유유산’으로 활용되고 있다. 2023년 말 기준 총 20,270명(한국인 13,371명, 외국인 6,899명)이 공사관을 다녀갔다.

문화재청은 올해 공사관에 대한 접근성을 향상하기 위해 국외소재문화재재단 미국사무소와 워싱턴한인커뮤니티센터(이사장 김태환), 재미한국학교 워싱턴 지역협의회(회장 정광미)와 공동 협력해 <찾아가는 주미대한제국공사관> 순환 버스를 운행한다. 2월부터 11월까지 매월 두 번째 수요일과 토요일 오전에 워싱턴 D.C. 인근 지역(워싱턴 D.C.·매릴랜드주·버지니아주) 거주 재외동포들을 대상으로 운영될 예정이다. 한미 간 역사적·문화적 가치를 공유하고 있는 공사관이 현지 동포사회와 보다 가까워지는 계기가 될 것으로 기대된다.

또한, 올해 봄(5월)과 가을(10월)에는 펜실베이니아주 필라델피아 지역까지 아우르는 <미국 속 한국을 만나다> 탐방 프로그램도 실시될 예정이다. 프로그램 참가자들은 공사관과 서재필기념관을 포함한 워싱턴 D.C.와 필라델피아 지역의 국외 사적지를 방문하여 한미 우호의 역사를 체험할 수 있을 것이다. 국외소재문화재재단 미국사무소, 워싱턴한인커뮤니티센터, 서재필기념재단(회장 최정수)와 공동 협력하여 추진할 예정이다.

적극행정의 일환으로 추진되는 <찾아가는 주미대한제국공사관> 순환 버스 운행과 <미국 속 한국을 만나다> 탐방 프로그램은 모두 무료로 진행된다.

문화재청과 국외소재문화재재단은 앞으로도 공사관을 비롯한 미국 속 ‘K-공유유산’의 가치를 우리 재외동포들과 향유할 수 있는 기반을 확대할 수 있도록 지속적으로 노력해 나갈 것이다.

 The Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA; Administrator: Choi Eung-chon) and the Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation (OKCHF; Chair: Kim Jung-hee) provide the shuttle bus service "Exploring the Old Korean Legation" and the exploration program "Encountering Korea in the U.S." targeting overseas Koreans residing near Washington D.C., with the aim of enhancing the convenience and utilization of the Old Korean Legation building located in Logan Circle, Washington D.C., USA.

The Old Korean Legation, originally used as a diplomatic mission during the Joseon era and the early years of the Korean Empire, holds a significant place in our history. Acquired in 1891 and forcefully sold by Japan in 1910, it encapsulates approximately 20 years of our history. Subsequently, the Legation building became privately owned in the United States until its purchase by the CHA in October 2012. Over a span of five years, the Legation underwent data collection, restoration, and remodeling, reopening its doors as a history museum in May 2018. It continues to be actively utilized as a prominent 'K-Shared Heritage.' As of the end of 2023, a total of 20,270 individuals (13,371 Koreans and 6,899 locals) have visited the Legation building.

In 2024, to enhance accessibility to the Old Korean Legation, the OKCHF's U.S. office, the K-Community Center (Chairman Tae Hwan Kim), and NAKS - Washington Association for Korean Schools (President Eunice K Chung) will collaborate to operate the "Exploring the Old Korean Legation" shuttle bus. Starting from February and continuing until November, the shuttle bus will be available on the second Wednesday and Saturday mornings of each month for overseas Koreans residing in the DMV - Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia areas (Korean American individuals and Korean school teenagers). This collaborative effort is expected to bring the Legation, which shares historical and cultural values between Korea and the U.S., closer to the local Korean community.

Additionally, in the spring (May) and fall (October) of this year, there are plans to conduct the "Encountering Korea in the U.S." exploration program, covering the Philadelphia area in Pennsylvania. This program will allow participants to experience the history of Korea-U.S. friendship by visiting overseas cultural heritage sites, including the Legation and the Philip Jaisohn Memorial House, in the Washington D.C. and Philadelphia regions. The program is a collaborative effort between the Overseas Cultural Heritage Foundation's U.S. office, the Washington Korean Community Center, and the Philip Jaisohn Memorial Foundation (President George J.S. Choe).

As part of proactive administration, the "Exploring the Old Korean Legation" shuttle bus service and the "Encountering Korea in the U.S." exploration program will both be provided free of charge. The CHA and the OKCHF will continue their efforts to expand the foundation for our overseas compatriots to appreciate the value of 'K-Shared Heritage' within the United States, including the Old Korean Legation.
