현장 참여프로그램 확대, 외국인 위한 별도 예약시스템 도입 … 4.27.~5.5, 5대 고궁 및 종묘

  문화재청 궁능유적본부는 한국문화재재단(이사장 최영창)과 함께 <2024 봄 궁중문화축전>을 오는 27일부터 5월 5일까지 9일간 서울의 5대 고궁(경복궁·창덕궁·덕수궁·창경궁·경희궁)과 종묘 일대에서 개최한다.

올해 10주년을 맞이하는 ‘궁중문화축전’은 아름다운 고궁을 배경으로 다채로운 전통문화 활용 콘텐츠를 선보여온 국내 최대 문화유산 축제이다. 지난 한 해도 봄·가을 2회, 15일에 걸친 축전에 총 67만 5천여 명의 국내외 관람객이 방문하며 큰 사랑을 받았다.

‘2024 봄 궁중문화축전’은 10주년을 기념하여, 궁을 찾은 관람객들이 별도의 예약 없이도 현장에서 쉽게 참여할 수 있도록 상설 프로그램을 확충했고, 글로벌 예약 시스템을 도입하는 동시에 프로그램에 외국인 대상 회차를 별도로 마련하는 등 외국인들이 참여할 수 있는 기회를 넓힌 것이 특징이다. 세종이 훈민정음 반포식을 여는 1446년으로 시간여행을 하는 듯한 연출과 함께 ‘궁중문화축전’의 정통성을 표현한 전통예술공연을 선보이는 개막제(4.26.)를 시작으로 공연, 체험, 참여 행사 등 조선 궁궐 문화의 정수를 경험할 수 있는 다채로운 프로그램들이 펼쳐진다.

▲ 경복궁에서는 조선 세종대를 배경으로 전통복식을 입고 궁중음식·무예·무용·회화 다양한 궁중 일상을 체험해 보는 ‘궁중새내기’ 등 4개의 관객 참여형 프로그램 ‘시간여행, 세종(5.1~5.5, 경복궁 전역)’을 새롭게 선보인다. 이와 함께, 조선의 음률을 만든 박연, 기술자를 선발하는 장영실 등 다양한 인물이 출연하는 소규모 상황극과 국왕과 왕비, 왕세자와 세자빈이 경회루, 향원정 등 경복궁의 대표 장소를 산책하는 모습을 재현한 왕가의 산책 등을 관람할 수 있다.

또한, 100명의 대금, 가야금, 해금 연주자가 모여 전통 국악을 연주하는 ‘고궁음악회-100인의 치세지음(治世之音)(5.4~5.5, 경복궁 근정전)’ 공연은 그간 접할 수 없었던 웅장한 조선 왕실의 음악을 감상할 기회가 될 것이며, 지난해 봄 궁중문화축전에서 전 회차 매진을 기록하며 호평을 받은 ‘고궁뮤지컬-세종, 1446(4.28~4.30, 경복궁 근정전)’이 다시 한 번 찾아온다. 세종대왕이 왕이 되기 전 충녕대군 시절부터 왕이 된 후 한글을 창제하던 과정에서 겪은 고난과 시련 등의 이야기를 담아낸 이 공연은 작품 속 실제 무대인 경복궁 근정전에서 펼쳐져 공연의 감동을 더한다.

무형유산 전승자의 공예품부터 전통문화상품, 궁중다과 등을 누구나 구입하고 즐길 수 있는 야외 시장 ‘K-헤리티지 마켓(K-Heritage Market, 4.27.~5.5, 경복궁 흥례문 광장)’도 궁중문화축전 기간 중 상시 운영된다.

▲ 창덕궁에서는 궁중문화축전 최초의 전통공예 전시인 ‘공생: 시공간의 중첩(4.27.~5.5, 창덕궁 전역)’이 준비된다. 창덕궁의 아름다움을 보여주는 3가지 요소인 ‘빛’, ‘색’, ‘먹’으로 구성하여, 한지장·단청장 등 무형유산 5종목의 작품을 포함하여 총 24점을 선보인다.

또한, <궁궐 걷는 법>의 저자 이시우 작가의 해설과 함께 창덕궁 곳곳을 아침에 산책하는 ‘아침 궁을 깨우다(4.29~5.3)’ 프로그램도 새롭게 선보인다. 사전 예약을 통해 하루 50명만이 참여할 수 있어 일반 관람 시간보다 1시간 빠른 오전 8시부터 2시간 동안 봄날 아침의 창덕궁을 만날 수 있는 특별한 기회가 될 것이다.

▲ 덕수궁에서는 ‘황실취미회(4.27.~5.5, 덕수궁 정관헌)’ 상설 프로그램이 열린다. ‘가배(커피)’, ‘옥돌(당구)’, ‘음악’ 등 고종이 사랑한 취미 생활을 체험할 수 있는 프로그램으로 별도 예약 없이 참여 가능하다.

또한, 상설 프로그램으로 ‘궁중문화축전’의 자원활동가 ‘궁(宮)이둥이’와 함께 문제 맞히기(퀴즈), 사진 촬영 등의 체험을 할 수 있는 소규모 행사 ‘궁중놀이방’도 운영된다.

▲ 창경궁에서는 가정의 달 5월을 맞이하여 어린이 관람객을 위한 ‘어린이 궁중문화축전(5.1~5.5)’이 개최된다. ‘숙수(궁중 요리사)’, ‘의관’, ‘화원’, ‘역관(통역사)’, ‘취타대’ 등 조선시대의 다양한 직업들을 체험할 수 있으며, 어린이 인형극, 전통 연희 등 공연과 해설을 동반한 창경궁 탐방도 함께 진행된다.

특히, 4대 궁궐 야간탐방 프로그램을 완성할 ‘창경궁 물빛연화(4.27~5.5, 창경궁 춘당지 일원)’ 프로그램이 첫 선을 보인다. 대춘당지와 소춘당지에서 이이남 작가가 참여한 미디어아트 작품을 만나볼 수 있고, 산책로를 따라 펼쳐지는 빛의 터널 등 빛을 활용한 다양한 콘텐츠들이 준비되어 있다.

▲ 경희궁 곳곳에서는 조선시대 서궐로 불렸던 경희궁의 역사와 구조를 살펴볼 수 있는 ‘경희궁을 만나다(5.1~5.5)’가 진행된다. 서울역사박물관의 어린이 교육 프로그램과 연계하여 운영되는 이번 프로그램은 어린이를 위한 맞춤 교육과 전시, 공연 3개 분야로 구성된다.

봄 궁중문화축전 사전예약 프로그램의 예매는 5일 오후 12시부터 티켓링크(www.ticketlink.co.kr)에서 선착순 판매된다. ▲ ‘고궁 뮤지컬-세종, 1446’, ‘고궁음악회-100인의 치세지음 治世之音’, ‘시간여행, 세종’, ‘아침 궁을 깨우다’는 유료프로그램으로 각 회당 800석, 700석, 160석, 50석으로 운영된다. ▲ ‘궁중문화축전 개막제’, ‘어린이 궁중문화축전(궁중직업실록)’은 무료로 관람이 가능하나 반드시 사전 예약을 해야 한다.

아울러 외국인 전용회차로 편성된 ‘조선으로의 시간여행’ 및 ‘고궁음악회-100인의 치세지음(治世之音)’의 외국인 할당 좌석 예매는 새롭게 도입된 글로벌 예약 누리집 ‘크리에이트립(www.creatrip.com)’을 통해 4월 1일부터 판매되고 있다.

이 밖에도 이번 ‘봄 궁중문화축전’ 기간 동안 5대궁을 무제한으로 방문할 수 있는 특별 관람권인 ‘궁패스’가 오는 26일까지 1만 장 한정 사전 판매 중이다.

In collaboration with the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation, the Cultural Heritage Administration Royal Palaces and Tombs Center announced to host the 2024 Spring K-Royal Culture Festival from April 27 through May 5. This grand celebration will take place amidst the historic splendor of Seoul's five royal palaces - Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, Deoksugung Palace, Changgyeonggung Palace, and Gyeonghuigung Palace - as well as Jongmyo Shrine.

Marking its tenth anniversary this year, the K-Royal Culture Festival stands as Korea's premier cultural heritage event, showcasing a diverse array of traditional cultural content against the backdrop of these magnificent palaces. Held twice a year, in spring and autumn, last year's festivals collectively drew over 675,000 visitors from both domestic and international spheres.

The 2024 Spring K-Royal Culture Festival kicks off with the Opening Ceremony on April 26, promising an even richer program in commemoration of its milestone anniversary. Additionally, efforts have been made to expand permanent programs, allowing visitors to partake in palace experiences without the need for prior reservations. Furthermore, the establishment of a program reservation system via global platforms and the introduction of tailored programs for foreigners aim to make the festival more accessible and enjoyable for international visitors.

Opening Ceremony the Dignity of Traditional Performances

Opening Ceremony of the spring festival is themed around the "Love for the People" of King Sejong the Great of the Joseon Dynasty, presenting a captivating concept that reimagines King Sejong's proclamation of the Hunminjeongeum script in 1446. With elements of time travel evoking the authenticity of the royal court, the festival's dignified commencement sets the stage for a spectacular display of K-Culture.

Experiencing the Essence of Joseon Dynasty’s Royal Palace Culture at Gyeongbokgung Palace

Throughout the festival, the Gyeongbokgung Palace will host a variety of programs offering insights into the activities of the Joseon Dynasty’s royal court. From May 1 to 5, visitors can participate in the "A Time Travel, King Sejong" program, offering a glimpse into various aspects of palace life during the reign of King Sejong the Great (1418-1450). This immersive experience includes tasting palace cuisine and learning about the figures and achievements of that era.

At the Gyeongbokgung Palace’s Geunjeongjeon Hall, the “Palace Concert: A Performance by 100 Artists” will take place on May 4 and 5. Featuring 100 performers playing traditional Korean musical instruments such as the daegeum, gayageum, and haegeum, this concert promises to be a magnificent showcase of the music of the Joseon Dynasty’s royal court. The sight of 100 performers adorned in crimson attire performing in front of the Geunjeongjeon Hall is sure to create a majestic spectacle.

Furthermore, following its sold-out success at last year's spring festival, the "Royal Palace Musical - King Sejong, 1446” will be performed again at the Geunjeongjeon Hall from April 28 to 30. This musical portrays the hardships and trials faced by King Sejong the Great, from his days as Crown Prince Chungnyeong to his reign as king, including the creation of the Korean alphabet, Hangul. Presented at the historic Geunjeongjeon Hall, the performance adds an extra layer of emotion to the festival.

Gyeongbokgung'sHeungryemun Square will host the "K-Heritage Market," an outdoor market where visitors can enjoy traditional crafts, cultural products, palace sweets, and more. Operating throughout the festival, this lively market is set to become a vibrant hub of festival excitement for visitors to the Gyeongbokgung Palace.

Exhibition Programs and Morning Events at Changdeokgung Palace

The Changdeokgung Palace will host its inaugural traditional craft exhibition, "MEETS: A Timeless Harmony" from April 27 to May 5. Held at the Changdeokgung'sInjeongjeon Hall for the first time, this exhibition is especially significant. Comprising elements of "Light," "Color," and "Elegance," the exhibition features 24 works, including five intangible cultural heritage items such as hanji (traditional Korean paper) and dancheong (traditional Korean decorative coloring). The theme of "Coexistence of Past, Present, and Future in Craft" resonates uniquely within the space of Injeongjeon Hall, adding a special resonance to the venue.

A morning program, "Awakening the Morning Palace" will be introduced for visitors to stroll through the Changdeokgung Palace in the morning. Starting at 8 a.m. from April 29 to May 3, this program allows up to 50 participants per day to enjoy the scenery of the Changdeokgung Palace in the morning accompanied by commentary from writer Lee Si-woo. Reservation is required for this program, offering a unique opportunity to experience the fresh morning atmosphere of the palace not available to the general public.

Experiencing Royal and Modern Culture at Deoksugung Palace

During the festival, the Deoksugung Palace offers programs where visitors can experience both modern and royal culture.

At the Palace’s Jeonggwanheon Hall, the " Royal Recreations Club" program will run from April 27 to May 5. This program allows participants to experience the hobbies enjoyed by King Gojong (1852-1919), the 26th king of the Joseon Dynasty and the first emperor of the Korean Empire, including coffee and billiards, without the need for prior reservations.

Additionally, a small-scale experiential event called " Royal Court Games Playroom" featuring the volunteer character "Goong-eeDoong-ee," who can be considered the mascot of the festival, will also be offered.

Family-friendly Programs at Changgyeonggung Palace and Gyeonghuigung Palace

In celebration of Family Month in May, the Changgyeonggung Palace will host the "Children's K-Royal Culture Festival" from May 1 to 5. This event offers children the opportunity to experience various occupations from the late Joseon Dynasty, such as court chefs, doctors, gardeners, interpreters, and Chwitadae (Korean Traditional Marching Band) members. Alongside performances and explanations, guided tours of the Changgyeonggung Palace will also be provided.

At the Changgyeonggung Palace's Chundangji Pond, the "Moonlight Lotus Show at Changgyeonggung Palace" program will debut from April 27 to May 5. Visitors can enjoy media art works created by artist Lee In-nam both at bigger and smaller ponds of Chungdangji, and various content utilizing light along the walking paths.

Various events will take place at Gyeonghuigung Palace from May 1 to 5 under the theme "Discover Gyeonghuigung Palace" allowing visitors to explore the history and structure of the palace, which was once called the Western Palace during the Joseon Dynasty. Operated in conjunction with the Seoul Museum of History's children's education program, this event is divided into three categories: education, exhibition, and performance, offering programs tailored to children.
Advance reservations for the spring festival programs will be available for purchase on Ticketlink (www.ticketlink.co.kr) starting at 12 p.m. on April 5, on a first-come, first-served basis. Paid programs such as " Royal Palace Musical - King Sejong, 1446," " Palace Concert: A Performance by 100 Artists," " A Time Travel, King Sejong," and " Awakening the Morning Palace" will be limited to 800, 700, 160, and 50 seats per session, respectively. Admission to free events such as the "Opening Ceremony," " Children's K-Royal Culture Festival: Palace Job Diaries" is free but requires advance reservation.

Additionally, reservations for foreigner-exclusive performances such as " A AA Time Travel, King Sejong - A time travel to the Joseon dynasty" and " Palace Concert: A Performance by 100 Artists" will be available for booking from April via the newly introduced global reservation platform "Creatrip."

Furthermore, during the spring festival period, a limited number of "K-Royal Palaces PASS" tickets (up to 10,000 passes), offering unlimited access to the five grand palaces, are available for pre-sale until April 26.
