문화재청 국립해양문화재연구소(소장 김연수)는 2023년에 개최되는 제5회 아시아-태평양지역 수중문화유산 대회(Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Underwater Cultural Heritage, APCONF)를 우리나라에 유치하는 데 성공하였다.

  국립해양문화재연구소는 2011년 필리핀 마닐라에서 개최된 제1회 아시아-태평양지역 수중문화유산 대회부터 수중문화유산 조사‧연구 전문기관으로 대회에 참가해 왔다. 2017년 제3회 대회부터는 각 국의 연구자와 위원회에 우리나라 유치를 위한 지지를 요청해 왔으며, 올해 11월 2일 대만에서 개최된 제4회 대회에서 우리나라가 차기 개최지로 최종 확정되었다.

  아시아-태평양지역 수중문화유산 대회는 국제수중고고학회(IKUWA)와 더불어 수중고고학분야의 최고 권위를 자랑하는 국제 학술 행사다. 3년 주기로 개최되며, 아시아-태평양지역 48개국 수중문화유산 조사‧연구 전문가, 연구생 등이 참석하여 ▲ 수중문화유산과 수중고고학 관련 조사‧연구‧기술 경향 파악, ▲ 수중문화유산 관리와 보호 전략 논의 등 국가 간 수중문화유산 분야 현안 공유와 협력 방안을 논의한다.

  이번 유치 확정에 따라 내년 상반기에 대회 주제, 장소 등을 구체화하고 유네스코(UNESCO) 등 유관기관과 전국의 관련 분야 대학교와의 협력체계를 구축해 나갈 계획이다.

  문화재청 국립해양문화재연구소는 책임운영기관으로서 제5회 대회를 유치함에 따라 앞으로 아시아 최고 수준의 수중문화유산 조사‧연구‧보호 분야 선두주자로서 국가 영향력을 확대하고, 국제무대에서 주도적인 역할을 하도록 노력할 계획이다.

National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage announced as the host of the Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Underwater Cultural Heritage in 2023

The National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage (NRIMCH) (Director Kim Yeonsoo) won the bid to host the 5th Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Underwater Cultural Heritage (APCONF) in 2023.
 

NRIMCH has been taking part in APCONF since the first series hosted in Manila, the Philippines in 2011 as one of the institutes specialized in investigation and research in underwater cultural heritage. NRIMCH has been asking for support to host APCONF in South Korea since the 3rd conference in 2017. South Korea was announced as the next host country at the 4th APCONF in Taiwan in November 2nd 2021.

APCONF is one of the most prestigious international conferences in the field of underwater cultural heritage in accompany with International Congress for Underwater Archaeology(IKUWA : Internationaler Kongreß für Unterwasserarchäologie). The conference is hosted every 3-years in turn. The experts and students from 48 countries in Asia-Pacific regions join together to keep current with the latest survey, research, and technology of underwater cultural heritage. The conference aims to address management and protection strategies of underwater cultural heritage and to provide a forum for discussion of technical and ethical issues related to underwater cultural heritage. 

The theme and venue for the conference have yet to be decided upon, but NRIMCH will develop the plan by the first half year of 2023 and will build a cooperative system with related organizations including UNESCO and universities with the same interest.
