  문화재청 국립고궁박물관(관장 김인규)은 대한제국 시대 여권인 <집조(執照)>를 10월의 ’큐레이터 추천 왕실 유물‘로 정해 국립고궁박물관 1층 상설전시장 ’대한제국‘ 전시실에서 소개하고, 6일부터는 문화재청과 국립고궁박물관 유튜브로도 공개한다.

  집조는 국경을 넘어 출국을 확인하는 조선 시대 문서로, 대상자가 국경을 통과하도록 협조해 달라는 내용이 3개 언어(한문, 영문, 불문)로 인쇄되어 있다. 발급일, 인적사항, 출발지와 도착지는 대상자에 따라 수기로 작성했고, 외부(外部)와 발급요청기관의 도장을 각각 찍었다. 형태는 낱장의 종이로 상단에는 대한제국을 상징하는 태극기와 오얏꽃 무늬가 찍혀있다.
  * 외부: 외교 업무를 담당하는 기관으로 집조 발급을 관장(현재의 외교부에 해당)

  이번에 소개하는 대한제국 집조에는 일본 유학생으로 선발된 한성 거주자 이상목(李相穆)(1890~?)이 인천에서 출발하여 일본 도쿄에 도착하는 출국일정으로 허가받은 내용이 담겨 있다. 발급요청기관으로 교육을 담당한 학부(學部)의 인장이 찍혀 있고, 외부와 학부 사이 업무기록의 일본 유학생 명단에 동일한 이름이 있어 이상목이 일본 유학을 위해 발급받았을 것으로 추정한다. 이상목 집조를 통해 대한제국이 여러 행정기관과 유기적인 협력해 출입국 제도를 운영했음을 확인할 수 있다.

  전시는 코로나19 확산 방지를 위해 방역수칙을 준수하는 가운데 진행되며, 직접 방문하지 않아도 국민 누구나 볼 수 있도록 국립고궁박물관 누리집(gogung.go.kr)과 문화재청 유튜브, 국립고궁박물관 유튜브에서 국·영문 자막과 함께 해설영상도 공개한다.

Jipjo (A Korean Empire Document for Overseas Travel) to be Showcased in the Gallery and Online / Starting October 6-

The National Palace Museum of Korea (Director: Kim In Kyu), an affiliate of the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea, has selected its Korean Empire Passport (known in Korean as a jipjo) as its “Curator’s Choice from the Royal Treasures” for the month of October. In addition to being displayed in the permanent Korean Empire gallery on the 1F floor of the museum, the document will be presented virtually in a YouTube broadcast starting October 6.

A jipjo is a document demonstrating the holder’s eligibility to travel abroad. It features text in three languages (Literary Chinese, English, and French) that requests cooperation and asks that the bearer of the document be allowed to pass through national borders. The date of issuance, personal information of the bearer, place of departure, and destination were added by hand, and the document was stamped with the seals of the Imperial Korean Foreign Office and the office requesting the issuance. Each jipjo took the form of a single sheet of paper printed with a Taegeukgi and a plum blossom, the symbols of the Korean Empire, at the center-top of the document.

The document featured as the Curator’s Choice was issued to a resident of Hanseong (now Seoul) named Yi Sang Mok (1890 – ?) who had been selected to study abroad in Japan. The document states that Yi has been granted permission to undertake a voyage to Tokyo from Incheon. The passport offers a better understanding of the border control system of the Korean Empire.

The museum may currently be accessed only in accordance with the requirements in place to reduce the potential for the spread of COVID-19. Those who are unable to visit the gallery in person can still enjoy this month’s Curator’s Choice virtually through a video with Korean and English subtitles available on the museum’s website (gogung.go.kr). Visitors can also see on the YouTube channels of the museum and of the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea.
