국립문화재연구원, 국보․보물 괘불도 47점 고화질 사진 서비스 개시(9.18.~)

  문화재청 국립문화재연구원(원장 김연수)은 국보 · 보물로 지정된 괘불도(掛佛圖) 47점의 고화질 사진을 9월 18일부터 ‘문화유산 연구지식포털(https://portal.nrich.go.kr)’ ‘한국의 괘불 갤러리’ 메뉴에서 공개한다.

  괘불도는 야외에서 거행되는 영산재(靈山齋), 천도재(薦度齋) 등 대규모 불교의식에 사용하기 위해 제작된 불화로, 부처님이 설법하는 장면을 대형 화폭에 그린 것으로 높이 10m가 넘는 것들도 많다. 웅장한 크기와 화려한 색채, 정교한 묘사가 특징인 괘불도는 세계적으로 유례가 없는 소중한 문화유산임에도 압도적인 크기 때문에 국민들이 쉽게 접근하여 볼 수 없었다.

  이번에 온라인으로 공개하는 괘불도 고화질 사진은 문화재청과 국립문화재연구원, (사)성보문화재연구원이 함께 추진 중인 대형불화(괘불도) 정밀조사 사업(2015~2024년)을 위해 촬영한 것으로, 국보 ‧ 보물로 지정된 괘불도 전체 62점 중 조사가 완료된 ｢죽림사 세존 괘불탱(竹林寺 世尊 掛佛幀)｣ 등 총 47점(국보 6건, 보물 41건)의 고화질 사진이 최초 공개된다.

  문화유산 연구지식포털의 ‘한국의 괘불 갤러리’ 에서 공개되는 사진들은 최소 3,000만 화소에서 최대 6,000만 화소의 고화질 자료로, 모든 사진은내려받기가 제한되는 대신 그동안 가까이 보기 힘들었던 조선시대 화승들의정교한 필치와 섬세하게 그려놓은 아름다운 문양 표현들을 세밀하게 확대하여 자세하게 감상할 수 있다.
또한 불화 연구자들을 위해 괘불도의 조성 기록인 화기(畵記) 정보를 함께 수록하였으며, 불화가 낯선 일반인들을 위해서 그림 속에 등장하는 여러 권속(眷屬)들을 부르는 명칭을 말풍선 설명 기능으로 제공하였다.
2024년까지 예정되어 있는 문화재청의 ‘대형불화 정밀조사 사업’ 일정에 따라 이번에 1차로 공개된 47점 이외에 나머지 15점의 고화질 사진도 조사가 완료 되는대로 순차적으로 공개할 예정이다.

  문화재청 국립문화재연구원은 고화질 괘불도 사진의 공개가 괘불이 가진 아름다운 예술적 가치를 세계인들과 함께 감상하고 즐기는 계기가 되기를 기대하며, 앞으로도 다양한 학술 정보와 연구 자료들을 디지털 자료로 구축하여, 국민들이 손쉽게 이용할 수 있도록 적극적으로 공개해 나갈 예정이다.  

  The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage (NRICH; General Director Kim Yeonsoo), an affiliate of the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea, will be offering high-resolution images of gwaebul (large Buddhist hanging scrolls) designated as treasures or national treasures to the public through the NRICH Research Portal (https://portal.nrich.go.kr) starting September 18.

  These high-resolution images being made available online were created as part of the “In-depth Research Project of Large Buddhist Paintings (2015–2024)” being undertaken by the Cultural Heritage Administration, the NRICH, and the Research Institute of Sungbo Cultural Heritage. The NRICH Research Portal is releasing photos of the forty-seven gwaebul paintings that have been already investigated, including the example at Jungnimsa Temple (Shakyamuni Buddha), from among the sixty-two gwaebul paintings designated as treasures or national treasures.

  The term ‘gwaebul’ refers to Buddhist paintings produced for use during large-scale outdoor Buddhist rituals. They are over ten meters high and typically depict a scene of the Buddha preaching. These gwaebul paintings marked by their massive sizes, brilliant colors, and delicate depictions have no parallels anywhere else in the world and make up part of the invaluable cultural heritage of Korea. However, due to their overwhelming sizes, these paintings have not been easy to access by the public.

  The images available in the ‘Gwaebul of Korea’ gallery on the NRICH Research Portal are high resolution ranging between 30 and 60 million pixels. Although downloading the images is prohibited, the NRICH Research Portal allows users to examine previously inaccessible details of the paintings by zooming in on them. The zoom function enables users to appreciate the beautiful, detailed designs and exquisite brushwork applied by skillful monk-painters of the Joseon Dynasty. The NRICH Research Portal also provides information to interested researchers on the inscriptions on the paintings regarding their production. Moreover, visitors to the portal who may be relatively unfamiliar with Buddhist paintings can learn the names of the Buddha’s many followers depicted in the paintings by using the word balloon function. According to the schedule for the “In-depth Research Project of Large Buddhist Hanging Scrolls (2015–2024),” the NRICH Research Portal is planning to upload additional high-resolution images of the remaining gwaebul paintings designated as treasures or national treasures.

  This portal allowing easy access to high-resolution images of gwaebul paintings invites everyone to observe the artistic value of these beautiful paintings with their own eyes. It is hoped that it will provide an ample opportunity for the global community to enjoy and appreciate the treasured cultural heritage of Korea.

  To meet the needs of the digital era, the NRICH will continue to digitalize a wide variety of scholarly information and research materials and fully engage in facilitating their accessibility.
